I became an Independent ACN Rep in 1995 mainly because a family member was excited, and I thought it made sense to try to take some money back from the rich big three telephone companies at that time. Deregulation had created opportunities for people to save on exhorbitant per minute calling rates from newer companies like ACN. Just after I joined ACN though I found Cognigen via Google, which offered long distance rates at about the same cost per minute as ACN and no Rep signup or recurring fees whatsoever. Cognigen Independent Reps were almost always in profit on their very first sale, normally to themselves, whereas ACN Independent Reps had to reach a certain sales volume just to reach break-even to recover the initial signup fee and ongoing monthly costs. I never did promote ACN, in part due to recurring business costs and higher break-even point. Even though ACN commissions were twice as lucrative as Cognigen, and ACN did appear to have some pretty cool advanced products, I could feel good about bringing in even my Grandma into Cognigen as a Rep because everyone could be in profit with their first sale.
